Packaging MOQ Guide: Minimum Order Quantities Explained
Understand custom packaging MOQ, why minimum order quantities exist, how they affect unit price, and practical ways to plan smaller or mixed orders.
Packaging MOQ is the smallest quantity a supplier will accept for a defined production job. It may apply to each structure, size, material, artwork version or finish combination—not necessarily the total number of boxes on the purchase order.

What sets an MOQ
The practical minimum can be set by any operation that has a setup or purchasing threshold:
- board or paper procurement;
- printing plates, device setup or press make-ready;
- cutting die and sheet layout;
- foil, embossing or other finish tooling;
- gluing or assembly method;
- molded or fabricated insert tooling;
- subcontracted process minimums; or
- sorting and packing of multiple versions.
Ask which operation controls the minimum. “Factory policy” is less useful than a process explanation.
MOQ behaves differently by packaging type
Stock packaging: the structure already exists, so the buyer may purchase a lower quantity with limited customization. The tradeoff is fixed dimensions, material and construction.
Digitally printed custom packaging: conventional plates may not be required, which can support shorter or versioned runs. Press format, substrate and unit cost still constrain the job.
Offset-printed folding cartons: plates, make-ready, sheet layout, die cutting and gluing can create a higher efficient run. The actual minimum depends on the complete specification.
Rigid boxes: wrapped-board components, assembly and fitted inserts can make short runs labor-intensive even when printing is simple.
Molded or specialty inserts: tooling or material purchasing can set a minimum independent of the outer box.

Total quantity is not the same as quantity per version
Suppose one box structure carries four artwork versions. The dieline and die may be shared, but each version may require separate artwork approval, plates or digital files, make-ready, identification and packing. A supplier may quote:
- one minimum for the total structure;
- one minimum per artwork;
- a combined minimum with a minimum split per version; or
- separate prices for each version.
Record the quantity by SKU before comparing quotes.
How MOQ affects unit and total economics
Increasing quantity spreads fixed setup over more units and may improve material purchasing or machine efficiency. It also increases total spend, storage, obsolescence and the risk that old artwork remains in inventory.
The cheapest unit is not automatically the best buying decision. Compare:
- total cash commitment;
- unit price at each quoted tier;
- expected consumption before artwork or product changes;
- storage and handling;
- repeat-order setup; and
- consequences of excess inventory.

How to request a lower quantity
Ask whether the project can use:
- an existing stock size or standard structure;
- digital rather than conventional printing;
- one board and finish across multiple versions;
- fewer artwork versions in the first run;
- a simpler insert or finish;
- separate prototype/sample production; or
- a paid setup charge instead of a larger production quantity.
These options do not guarantee acceptance or a lower total cost. They give the supplier concrete alternatives to evaluate.
What to include in an MOQ request
Provide the structure, internal dimensions, board, print coverage, finish, insert, total quantity, quantity per artwork, packing state and destination. Then request the minimum, the reason for it and at least one adjacent quantity tier.

MOQ should be treated as a result of the specified production route and supplier constraints. It is not a quality grade, an industry law or proof that a larger order is commercially sensible for the buyer.
